Dennis “Denny” Dunn, 69, Clemons, passed away Tuesday, February 23, 2016, while under the care of Iowa River Hospice, Marshalltown, surrounded by his loving family. Visitation is Friday, February 26, 2016 at Dakin’s Community Center, Zearing, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, February 27, 2016 at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church of Zearing at 10:00 a.m. with Father Rick Dagit officiating.
Denny was born in Marshalltown to Lawrence “Bud” and Evelyn (Gilmore) Dunn on January 11, 1947. From a very young age Denny worked the land with his father and had a great love for every aspect of farming. He graduated from West Marshall High School in 1964 and then attended Marshalltown Community College.
On March 2, 1968, he married Clair ‘Jo’ Hobbs. The couple resided in rural Clemons where they farmed and raised their family. He was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in St. Anthony until it was destroyed by fire in 2007; he then began attending St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Zearing. He was a member of the Marshall County Cattlemen’s Association, and was a charter member of the CPS “Bangor” Coffee Club. Denny loved every aspect of farming and it was his true passion in life. Denny enjoyed planting the crop, checking the crops, working the land, the harvesting, and taking the associated risks to expand farm operations. Everything in his life circled back to family, farming, faith, and friends. He enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling to his Clear Lake and Scottsdale, Arizona, residences. Over the years he gained many new friendships in those areas as well.
Those left to cherish Denny’s loving memories are his daughters: Carrie (Eugene) Meyer, Lisa (John) Witte, Christy (Ben) Watson, and Dana Dunn; grandchildren: Aaron (Amber) Shipley, Jordan Shipley, Carsen Dunn, Lexie Hundley, and Evan Watson; 3 great-grandchildren; sister Pat Foster; brothers Larry Dunn and Dale Dunn; special friend Julie McQuaid; many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
Denny was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jo on June 21, 2002, and Sister Donna Jean.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing has been entrusted with the care of Denny and his family.
