Nile Dean Lanning, 80, Nevada

Nile Dean Lanning, 80 of Nevada, passed away Sunday, September 24, 2023, at his home in Nevada surrounded by family.

Nile was born August 20, 1943, in State Center, Iowa, the son of Vernon and Ella (Clausen) Lanning. He graduated from Melbourne High School in 1961. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Serving until his honorable discharge in 1964. On April 19, 1969, Nile was united in marriage to Frances Rosemary Bensmiller in Mount Vernon. He worked many years as a journeyman lineman for Ma Bell, L. E. Myers, and Alliant Energy. He retired from Alliant Energy June 2005.

Nile was a 33 year member of IBEW and was Local 204’s president for 25 years. After retirement, Nile served on the Iowa Climate Change Advisory Council for a number of years. He was also a member of the William F. Ball Legion Post #48 and the Moose Lodge in Ames.

Nile was a fun-loving man known by all for his infectious smile and witty sense of humor. He enjoyed traveling with Fran, watching football, playing cards with the guys, and spending the morning at McDonald’s for coffee. He loved being with his family, especially his children and grandchildren.

Nile is survived by his wife, Fran of Nevada; his son, Jason Lanning of Altoona; his daughters, Jennifer (Robert) Sloan of Kansas City and Jackie (Brandon) Wilson of Colo; his grandchildren, Keaton and Holden Fry, Ella and Maya Lanning and Tag and Triffin Farrar; his brothers, Denny (Nancy) Lanning of Melbourne and Terry Lanning of Davis, CA; and his sister, Vivian Gagen of Ankeny. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Roger Lanning.

Nile has been cremated and no services planned at this time. Burial will be at a later date at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery in Van Meter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Nevada Food at First Food Bank.
