James Arnold Hartwig, 83, of Colo, Iowa, passed away at home with family on Monday, October 25, 2021.

Jim was born July 9, 1938, in Marshall County, Iowa to parents Arnold and Marguerite (Myers) Hartwig. He graduated from State Center High School and attended Iowa State University. On December 15, 1957, he married his high school sweetheart, Betty Usken of State Center. They raised two boys on the family farm in rural Colo where Jim was a long-time farmer.

Jim was a member of St Paul Lutheran Church and State Center Lions Club. Other than farming, activities that Jim enjoyed were being an outrider in parades for Dick Sparrow’s 40-Horse Hitch (including the Cotton Bowl and Rose Bowl parades), helping Mick Malloy of Rhodes build homes in the area, assisting Bob Daily of Colo with his auctions and cheering for Iowa State University sports teams.

Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 63 years, Betty, his son Douglas (Renee) Hartwig of State Center and many friends. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Marguerite; his brother, Richard, in infancy; sister, Jane; son, Craig; and in-laws George and Ida Usken. 

Services for Jim will include visitation on Thursday, October 28 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at St Paul Lutheran Church, 605 1st St N, State Center, IA 50247.  Funeral services will take place on Friday, October 29 at 10:00 AM, also at the church. He will be laid to rest following the service at Hillside Cemetery in State Center. Memorials in Jim’s honor may be made to St Paul Lutheran Church, State Center.
