Stanley Mahlon Speers, 65, Marshalltown
Stanley Mahlon Speers, 65, of Marshalltown, IA, passed away Saturday, December 5 at the Iowa Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, IA. He was there for surgery on a cancerous tumor, but contracted the COVID-19 virus, which ended his life. Private graveside services will be at Hillside Cemetery in State Center, IA. Stan was born January 14, 1955 in Marshalltown, IA to his parents George and Hannah (Njus) Speers. He grew up in State Center. Stan helped his dad around the farm and hatchery. He will be remembered as a uni-cyclist, like his brother Wendell. Uni-cycling was something that Stan loved and he would ride in the annual Rose parade in State Center. He also had a love for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Stan was committed to the Iowa Veterans Home after a diagnosis of Wenicke-Korsakoff syndrom. He was there for 18 ½ years. Stan was blessed to have such good care, friendly nurses and staff, and a beautiful campus to call home.
Stan is survived by his an older brother; Dr. Wendell (Nicky) Speers, older sister; Carol (Tim) Shugart, and sister in law; Louise Smith Speers. He will always be remembered by his many nieces and nephews and friends made at the Iowa Veterans Home. He is proceeded in death by his parents, and older infant sister Barbara, and his oldest brother Dr. George M Speers.
