Eva “Mae” Eckhart, 99, formerly of Melbourne

Eva “Mae” Eckhart, 99, of Glenwood Place, formerly of Melbourne, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, September 6, 2018.

A visitation will be held from 9:00a.m. until 11:30a.m.  on (PLEASE NOTE) Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown, Iowa.  Memorials may be directed to the family to be designated at a later date. Eva Mae Townsend was born at home in rural Jasper County, Iowa on May 7, 1919; she was the daughter of Henry and Mary (Carson) Townsend. She attended school in the area of her birth and graduated with the Baxter Class of 1937. On March 24, 1938, Mae was united in marriage to Glenn William Eckhart in Baxter, Iowa. She loved to cook for her family and was well known as being a “GREAT” cook. She had worked at the Melbourne Cafe as a cook and made all their homemade pies and for the Melbourne Post Office for 14 years.  Mae had been a member of the St. John United Church of Christ in Melbourne, Iowa. She enjoyed a good game of golf, bowling and bingo at Glenwood Place. Mae always looked forward to her winters in Arizona. She had a lifelong love for her Cubs, and the Diamond Backs.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Judith Ann (Chuck) Allred of Ensenada, Mexico, Donald Larry (Sally)Eckhart of Coal Valley, Illinois and Thomas Dean (Lois) Eckhart of Melbourne, Iowa; sisters, Wilma Jean Eckhart of State Center and Maryellen Gray of Rhoads, Iowa; 7 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

In death, Mae rejoins her parents, Henry and Mary Townsend; her husband, Glenn “Bud” Eckhart; daughter, Barbara Mae; sisters, Lucile Severidt and June Hardenburg; brothers, George and Harold Townsend.
