Hunzelman, Lucille 96

 Lucille O. Hunzelman, 96, of State Center passed away from her life on Friday, June 24, 2016, at the State Center Manor, where she had been a resident for 5 and one half years.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 1, 2016, St John’s Lutheran Church north of State Center, Iowa. Visitation will be Thursday, June 30, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home West Marshall Chapel at 104 W. Main in State Center. Lucille was born April 1, 1920 at home in rural St Anthony, Iowa. She was the daughter of Warren and Hilda (Hennies) Hunzelman. She grew up at the family farm one and a half miles south of St Anthony. She was baptized and attended St John’s Lutheran School and then St Anthony High School where she graduated in 1938. In 1941 after working for Dr. Wood’s at State Center Lucille was no stranger to hospitals and their fast pace. From 1941 to 1944 she was a nursing student at Evangelical Deaconess Home and Hospital School of Nursing. She then worked at MMSC (at the time the Evangelical Deaconess Home and Hospital) from 1944 until 1954 as an operating room Supervisor. For the next 30 years she worked at the Student Health Services at Cornell College in Mt Vernon, Iowa. During summer months Lucille taught Vacation Bible School and for many years, was a Nurse and Counselor at Camp Watervliet (a private camp for girls) in Watervliet, Michigan. Lucille was a very compassionate to those less fortunate and for charitable causes, especially for her church and Clemons Lutheran School. Lucille was a member of St John’s Lutheran Church for many years and belonged to the Ladies Aid Lucille loved to travel and even traveled overseas to several foreign countries and always enjoyed visiting with family and many friends.

Left to cherish her memory is her sister Dorothy Vaughn of Washington, Missouri, and a brother, Vernon (Marjorie) Hunzelman of Marshalltown and 13 nieces and nephews, 9 great nieces and nephews and 3 great –great nieces and nephews.
